2017: Following graduation from Wakefield I worked for the US Post Office for three years. In 1965, I went to Appalachian State University in Boone, NC where I played football all four years (thankfully no concussions-or I donít think so). I graduated in 1970 and entered the USMC as a 2nd Lieutenant and went to flight school in Pensacola, FL. After receiving my wings in 1971 I was transferred to MCAS New River in Jacksonville, NC. From April-October 1974 I was deployed on an aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean Sea and took part in the Cypress evacuation and the Suez Canal mine removal operation. I left USMC active duty in 1975 but remained in the USMC Reserve until retirement in 1992 at the rank of colonel.

After active duty I took a position in the private sector as a manager for Wells Fargo Alarm Services in Philadelphia, PA. I left Wells Fargo in 1979 and became a Special Agent for the FBI retiring in 2001. While with the FBI I worked organized crime and drugs, supervised a Colombian Drug Trafficking squad, and managed the FBIís national level crisis management program at the Critical Incident Response Group (CIRG) in Quantico, VA. While in CIRG I participated in the Oklahoma City bombing investigation, the Freemen standoff in Montana and the FBIís investigation of Slobodan Milosevic in Kosovo.

After retirement in 2001 I immediately started working for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and still work with ATF in their crisis management program and Emergency Support Function #13 (ESF #13) part of the nationís National Response Framework.

I have a daughter that lives in Tampa, FL and another in Maple Shade, NJ. I have two sons. The youngest lives in Riverton, NJ and the oldest graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 2013. He was the starting guard for three years but never had the opportunity to beat Navy. I am married to Alexandra (Sandy) Bowen. Sandy graduated from W&L (our arch enemies), UVA, and University of Richmond law school. She is the senior partner in her Richmond, VA law firm. We live in Midlothian, VA outside Richmond.
