Wakefield Class of 1960
Reunion Plans - 50th Anniversary of Graduation

Here's what's shaping up for our class's 50th Anniversary Reunion in 2010

The experience being planned for you is one where all you have to do is show up, and after that there won't be any complications to worry about - you can just go with the flow. The full-package experience will encompass Thursday evening (7 Oct) through Sunday morning (10 Oct). Monday is Columbus Day, a federal holiday, which would be a good day for traveling home - giving you most of Sunday as a bonus day to do whatever you would like to do. For a quick summary of the planned events, see the EVENTS link which follows.

Ordinarily, reunions don't involve more than a Friday and Saturday night room. But for those of you who want to and can get here Thursday, our reunion hotel has agreed that the discounted rates of Friday and Saturday will apply for Thursday night as well. And, for those of you who will want to stay over Sunday night, the discount will apply for that also.

What will the discount room rate be? It is $74 per night, plus $6.66 in government taxes, for a combined cost of $80.66 total.

The hotel is giving us a great rate.  A great package has also been pulled together under the registration fee as well.  It will be $115 for class members, and $80 for guests.  See the Feb Newsletter for details.  Go to the top-of-page menu above and click on NEWS and then link to the Feb newsletter when you get there.

As to the specific events planned, on Thursday evening, the "early-birds" will be gathering on the 2nd floor of classmate Fred Parker's Hard Times Cafe, in Alexandria for some of that famous chili. Because the 2nd floor seats only 50, this gathering may have to be accomplished in time-limited shifts, in which case perhaps an off-shift diversion could be worked into the evening. Or perhaps we'll just reconvene in the hotel's hospitality suite.

On Friday morning after breakfast, we'll board tour busses and do a little riding around Arlington to see what's new (and not).  After lunch, There will be an optional trip to the spectacular new (2003) National Air & Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center (adjacent to Dulles Airport), where we'll spend several hours enjoying some of the marvels on display there, and perhaps an IMAX movie.  After return to the hotel, there will be several hours of unstructured time (hospitality suite, exercise room, swimming pool).

On Friday evening, there will be a social gathering at a venue different from the ballroom, to just enjoy each other's company and swap stories, and have some casual food and drink.

After we close down the Friday night venue, it's back to the hospitality suite, to continue where we left off.

On Saturday morning after breakfast, we'll board busses and head over to Wakefield H.S., and get the grand tour there.

After the Wakefield tour, we'll head down to Shirlington to enjoy lunch in numerous of their restaurants (see Links in top-of-page menu).

Currently, nothing is planned for Saturday afternoon after Shirlington. We'll return to the hotel and the hospitality suite, exercise room, hospitality suite, nap, or whatever. If there's something you'd like to do as a group, let us know.

Saturday evening will be the main event: a nice sit-down dinner, and some good dance music and dancing. There will be lots of side tables set up with memorabilia, and there will be raffles and door prizes, etc.

After the main event, there will be a follow-on reconvening in the hospitality suite. Last person standing wins some sort of prize.

Sunday morning, we'll say good-byes at breakfast (or maybe not - depends on how many want to do one more group thing).

Independent (or group) sightseeing opportunities abound. If you are going to stay over Sunday, there are of course many interesting things to see that you will not have seen if you haven't been back to the area in a while. Mount Vernon has just added a new visitor center that offers quite an improved experience in visiting our first president's little place on the Potomac. The World War II memorial has been added between the Viet Nam Memorial and the Washington Monument. And there's also the Korean Memorial - one of the most moving, some say - if you've never seen that. We'll highlight more ideas with each update of these pages. See Links in top-of-page menu for useful paths to tourist info.

What will the other-than-room cost be?

The registration cost has been set at $115 for class members, and $80 for guests.  See the Feb Newsletter for details.  Go to the top-of-page menu above and click on NEWS and then link to the Feb newsletter when you get there.
