Gerald R. Groves, 80, an English and history teacher who retired in 1982 from
Wakefield High School after about 30 years with the Arlington County school system, died
of respiratory failure June 30 at Cherrydale Health Care Center in Arlington. A
resident of Arlington, he had lived in the Washington area since 1945.
Mr. Groves was born in Hornell, New York. He was a graduate of George Washington
University, where he received a master's degree in education. He served in the Army
in Europe during World War 11. He taught at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School
before transferring to Wakefield in 1959.
After he retired, he was a real estate broker for 10 years with Hanlon Associates in
He had been president of the Arlington Education Association and was a member of
Cherrydale United Methodist Church.
His marriage to Pandora Groves ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Celeste B. Groves of Arlington; two children from
his first marriage, Michael William Groves of Hudson, New Hampshire, and Kelly Davidson of
Fairfax; a son from his second marriage, Glenn Richard Groves of Arlington; two brothers;
two sisters; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
