Wakefield Class of 1960
Graduation Photo
Here's what a slightly scorched Class of 1960 graduation photo looks like.
History preserved by a determined woman
All of you are familiar with Dolley Madison's heroic efforts during the War of 1812 to save important items in the
White House from destruction at the hands of the British as they closed in on Washington, DC with the intent of
burning all significant government structures. Thanks to Dolley, a superb and significant portrait of George
Washington (painted by Gilbert Stuart) survived. Likewise, our classmate Letty Sloan
Mallery risked life and limb charging into a burning attic to save her Wakefield Class of 1960 Graduation Photo.
Well - actually, that's a bit of editorial sensationalism to increase readership. But Letty did carefully
check what was salvageable after a household fire, and determined that the Graduation Photo had made it through
in fairly intact condition - and fortuitously committed to saving it for posterity. Many thanks to Letty for
letting us borrow her photo to post on our website, and to use in the Directory that will be made available to attendees
of our 50th celebration, October 7-10, 2010.
Click on the photo to bring up a max resolution version that you can pan around on to see the faces close up.
Bill Woessner has recently made available an image of his Graduation Photo, which hasn't had quite as traumatic a past.
We'll have that up for your viewing pleasure the second week in September.
If any of you has a list of who's who, row-by-row, please get it to us so we can post it below the picture.
