CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - Mortimer Foster Irwin, 86, died
August 4, 2009, at the White Oak Manor Nursing Home in Charlotte, North Carolina. He
was a former Vergennes, Vermont resident.
He served in the Marine Corps during World War II, then became a lifelong teacher and
coach.
He is survived by his twin sisters, Diane M. Irwin of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dawn
I. Shaw of Leesburg, Virginia.
He was predeceased by his younger brother, Henry Irwin IV.
His ashes will be interred at the Congregational Church Cemetery in West Hartland,
Connecticut.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bixby Memorial Library, 258 Main Street,
Vergennes, Vermont 05491.

Mr. Irwin was a history teacher and Wakefield's first baseball
coach. He was one of the people tasked with getting the school ready for the
students coming in September 1952. |
