James
Robert (J.B.) Hill, LTC, US Army Retired and Vice-President and Southwest Regional
Director, Science Applications International Corporation died suddenly on Wednesday,
August 25, 1999 of an apparent heart attack at his home in San Antonio. Born
February 25, 1943 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he was the son of James Edward and Gertrude
Claybourn Hill. After graduating from Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia,
he received his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami,
Coral Garden, Florida. He was a member of the Iron Arrow Honor Society, Phi Delta
Theta Fraternity, Editor of the University Newspaper, and field goal kicker for the Miami
Hurricanes football team. He received Master's Degrees from St. Mary's University in
Systems Engineering and Baylor University in Health Care Administration. During his
twenty-year career in the U.S. Army, he not only served as an Aeromedical and Evacuation
Pilot (DUSTOFF) in Vietnam, but also held various teaching, administrative and command
positions throughout the U.S. and Germany. His final assignment was as Project
Officer on the Composite Health Care System at the Army Hospital, Ft. Knox, Kentucky.
At his retirement ceremony, he was honored as having been selected as a Kentucky
Colonel. Among his military awards were the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple
Heart, 41 Meritorious Service Medals, and 20 Air Medals (4 with "V" device for
Valor), Vietnamese Cross of Galantry with Palm and the Order of Military Medical Merit.
He was a lifetime member of the DUSTOFF Association, as well as a member of the
American Military Surgeons of the U.S. After retiring from the Army in June 1988, he
and his family moved to Southern California where he was employed by SAIC in La Jolla.
In December 1997, he was selected as Southwest Regional Director and moved to San
Antonio. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Karen
Lee Hill , San Antonio; his daughter, Danica Lce Hill, San Diego, California.; his sister,
Judith Hill Rothrock, Holmdel, New Jersey; mother-in-law Laura Lee McDonald of San Antonio
and formerly of Verges, Minnesota.; aunt Helen White of Buffalo, New York; niece and
nephew Stephen Rothsock and Kristen Evelyn Drusjack and numerous cousins and many friends
both military and civilian. His knowledge, experience and fair-mindedness earned him
the respect of everyone he met. He was loved by many and shall be forever missed.

Memorial services with Full Military Honors will be held Monday, August 30, 1999 at
1:00 P.M. in the Main Post Chapel of Ft. Sam Houston with Chaplain Wayne Harris
officiating.

Presently assigned to HQ, 7th Medical Command, as the quality assurance coordinator for
all medical facilities (Army) in Europe. Have been in Heidelberg for one year.
Previously spent two years in Hanau/Gelehausen, Germany with the 3rd Armored
Division Medical Battalion. Karen, Danika and I greatly enjoy Europe.

hospitals -- and other medical system projects (VA, commercial, etc.).

Retired Lt. Colonel, Army Medical Service Corps, after 21 years. Eight years with
Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC); Vice President of the Commercial Health
Care Systems Integration Group. However, primary job putting daughter, Danika,
through University of California, San Diego, and keeping my wife, Karen, as a
"kept" woman. Looking forward to seeing old friends. |
